Technology Tools:
Using Web Syndication to Promote your Website

Web syndication: a commonly used term, but what does it mean?

Basically, web syndication is a way of summarising the content on your website into a simple format so that it can be easily accessed by people who are interested in your subject matter.

Rss and PodCast - Image by H Rotgers

The most popular types of syndication are RSS feeds and PodCasts and both offer an affordable way to encourage repeat visits to your website so that you can build up a following. This following could be customers, business contacts, supporters, journalists or employees.

The benefits are incredible: say for example you add news, blogs, articles, event announcements or product updates and releases to your website on a regular basis; instead of having to encourage your followers to regularly visit your website to find out whether there is any new content to view, or sending time consuming e-mail alerts to draw them in, you can allow them to track your updates via their online news reader where they can view a summary of your update and simply click through to the new content in which they are interested.

RSS Feeds: Explained

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. RSS consists of basic text files describing your website content. If you regularly update your website content, for example add news, blogs, articles and announcements then RSS is the perfect promotional tool to get your material in front of your followers, and to get it displayed on other websites too; don't forget that other sites may wish to display your feed because it is relevant to their own content.

How does RSS work?

Your website designer can create an RSS script for you that is linked to your web database and it will instantly update anyone who subscribes to your feed, without them having to visit your website, providing they have a news reader such as those provided by Google or Yahoo for example, or the ones built into the more recent versions of Internet Explorer and Firefox.

PodCasts: Explained

PodCasts? These are not unlike RSS feed in that they employ the same technology to syndicate content, but in this case, that content is media files, usually in MP3 format, rather than anything to do with the written word.

A PodCast could be a latest music release; a seminar; an advertising message; an announcement; a training session - absolutely anything! Your followers will subscribe to receive your material which will be automatically downloaded via their news reader so that they can listen to it at their leisure.

PodCasts are not just suitable for iPods; they can be downloaded to virtually any portable media player.

Web Syndication: Why it's good News for your Website
