Things to Consider when Setting up your Website

To gain the edge over competitors, an online presence is an essential step forward.

But as with anything in the online world, if you are a novice, things can seem very complicated indeed.

Here is some guidance as to the first steps you need to take when considering your first steps into the online world:

  • Selecting a Domain Name
  • Website Hosting
  • The Importance of Professional Advice

Selecting a Domain Name

You need a 'domain name' for your website, your www. This is very important. Whilst you may want a clever name or a personal address that only you know the significance of, it is not the best idea. The most effective domain names are those that contain your major keywords and are easy to remember and type. Difficult names that are easily mis-spelt are to be avoided!

Your website design team will be able to advise you on the best course of action with your domain name so it’s always best to take their advice.

Website Hosting

Website hosting comes in various forms but the major split is between shared hosting and dedicated hosting. What’s the best choice? For websites attracting a lower volume of traffic or which don’t have too big a database, shared hosting is usually sufficient. Your website will share space on a web server with other websites and it’s the more affordable option.

However, if your website attracts a higher level of traffic, or has a substantial database, or you are sending large volumes of mail, then dedicated hosting is probably the best option. Your website is hosted on a server in its own right and will therefore never be slowed down by other sites.

Your website developer will ensure you select the right level of hosting to suit your needs. There are many options within each of the two major choices, so make sure you take professional advice as to your website hosting needs.

The Importance of Professional Advice

When selecting a domain name or choosing website hosting options, it’s vital to take professional advice at the outset to ensure the right choices are made.
