Working on a website? If you are going down the DIY route, or a friend who knows a friend has said they’ll do it for you, or you have Googled ‘cheap web design’ and made your selection from the myriad companies that appeared, then read on for some worthwhile advice because you could run into serious problems otherwise!
Good website designers know their stuff. Would you ask a friend of a friend to fix your boiler if they weren’t qualified? Would you Google ‘cheap decorators’ for your interior design project? Re-wire your house yourself? No, of course not!
There are many reasons why using a professional and renowned web designer is the only course of action that’s right for your business. Let’s examine a few areas of web design and you can draw your own conclusions.
Take photographs, for example. So many people think because it’s on the web, it’s yours to use as you please. No! The truth is you cannot just cut and paste any image you like on your site, not unless you want a strong legal letter landing in your lap. The same goes for content; it has to be unique and not just because of copyright infringement, but because if Google finds duplicate content it will penalise you and you’ll drop right down those all important rankings! And what’s the point of a website if no one can find it?
And while we all like to think we can string a few sentences together and call it website content, how would you, or your obliging friend, know that you’re using the correct words and phrases to get those search engines working for you? Certain combinations of words are more likely to generate traffic towards your website, but it’s generally only the specialists who will know exactly what to say and how to say it.
And how to build it; some methods of website design just quite simply aren’t search engine friendly.
Amateur website designers will not always be aware of the strict rules and regulations that surround the online world. Ask them these few questions and see: ask them how much they know about the Disability Discrimination Act and how if a site isn’t accessible to all it can be taken down. Ask them about the importance of a Privacy Policy. Ask them about what information needs to be displayed on a website by law; about Terms and Conditions. See how much they know!
These are just a few of the minefield areas that could cause serious problems for your business if you decide to go down the DIY, cheap or phone a friend routes of website design. Be careful: you have been warned!
Instead contact a professional website design company and don’t worry because if you are on a tight budget, any good designer will offer a low cost web design option that will suit your needs.
