Boost your Small or Start up Business: Get a Website!

If you are starting a new business or running a small company and don't have a website, you could be seriously losing out on increased turnover!

A recent report by PayPal states that businesses face an average 37% boost in turnover thanks to having a website. Despite the internet revolution, the report also surprisingly showed that a large number of smaller businesses had not yet set up a website including 46% of service providers and 61% of goods suppliers in the small business category.

PayPal's general manager for UK merchant services, Cameron McLean, said that websites acted as a 'key launch pad' to success for small businesses, saying, 'We know that consumers are looking to the internet more and more in the current climate, to search out bargains and fully research which businesses they are going to use.'

So if your small business doesn't have a website, it clearly needs to get one. And if you are planning to start a new business, make sure a website is on your start-up list.

Websites don't have to be expensive; a search for a small business website package provider in your area should bring up a list of web designers that are specifically experienced and geared up to deal with your particular needs as a smaller company.

What to look for in a small business web design company

There are a few things to consider when searching for a web developer who is suitable for your needs as a small business; here are a few tips:

Simple packages offered?

Do they offer simple packages that you can actually afford? Avoid over-complicated designs or developers that don't have a good commercial understanding of your needs budget-wise.

Do they build websites that work?

Ask for a list of sites that they have designed and check how they are doing in the search engines. Contact the owners of these sites and find out how successful they have been in bringing in work.

Do they offer added extras?

Do they include web hosting and domain name registration to make things easier for you? Is e-mail included in your package? And statistics so that you can monitor the success of your new website? Choose a designer that will help you with everything and that offers the most comprehensive package for your budget.

Can they communicate?

Is the designer friendly and helpful? Do they communicate well? Choose someone who is happy to visit you and speak to you on the telephone and provide an overall good service. Don't be afraid to ask for testimonials for past clients - and check them!

'Online sales are bucking the high-street street trend and businesses should establish their online presence before they are left behind. Not having a website is like leaving your shop-front boarded up or refusing to tell customers anything about the services you provide,' is the resounding statement from PayPal's Cameron McLean. If you have a small business, or are thinking of starting one, you must have a website!
